Owner's Comments:
ESCAPE is a sloop rigged Newport 28 MKII which was built in Santa Cruz California by Capital Yachts Inc. for our family. There is a complete maintenance log with records going back to day one. This Newport has a Wing Keel with a four foot draft (perfect for island hopping in the Bahamas); This boat has Main Sail with full battens (6/2007), 140 Genoa Jib on a roller furling. All of the sheets lead to the cockpit. She is super clean and there is a transferable boat slip available at Halifax Harbor Marina, this beautiful boat is truly turn key and she is waiting for her new owners.
I have mixed feelings about selling this boat as sailing has been my passion for the past 35 years. I started with a Sunfish, moved up to a 22 footer, then a 23 footer (Irwin) and then our Newport 28 which we had built in Santa Cruz California and delivered to us in Jacksonville Fla. We took delivery on the boat in November, 1989 and have been the sole owners since initial delivery. I’ve had the good fortune of being married to a woman who shares my passion for sailing and we have truly enjoyed the pleasures of this particular boat. She’s well equipped for offshore sailing which is the only type of sailing that I consider worthwhile. Four years ago I had knee replacement surgery on my left leg and today my range of motion is about 90 degrees. To me this represents what could be a dangerous disadvantage when sailing offshore given the fact that experience has taught me that decisions have to be made at a moments notice when foul weather appears imminent. The old rule of "if it enters your mind to do something, then do it right away."This disadvantage does not allow me to get the full enjoyment of sailing offshore that I've enjoyed over the years and it also causes me concern for the safety of those who may be aboard who depend on me for their well being. My sailing experiences include two passages from Daytona Beach to Bermuda (TransAt) having crewed aboard an Irwin 34 in the bi-annual TransAt race, one passage in a race from Daytona Beach to Charleston South Carolina aboard a Beneteau 51, one race (as crewmember) from Ft. Lauderdale to Daytona Beach, and several vacation trips to the Bahamas. Take notice that in regards to the racing activity I was a crewmember aboard other people’s boats which I will explain as follows: sailors that race their sailboats are no different in my opinion than are the racecar drivers of NASCAR. The only thing that matters to them is to win and if that means tearing up the boat to do it, that's what they'll do. I was invited many times to join the local Yacht Club for the purpose of them having another boat to include in their offshore racing events. I politely declined with the explanation that I enjoyed all benefits of racing as a crewmember on other people’s boats without having to expose my boat to the abuses those boats were subjected to in the racing activity and mindset of those involved in the racing activity. I do enjoy a lively day offshore aboard Escape. If the wind reaches a level that might require a reef in the mainsail then you do just that and continue with the lee rail awash. The boat sails like a dream and a person with the proper knowledge and experience will be able to handle just about anything that comes their way aboard this boat. While this boat has been sailed from day one, it has also been maintained over the years and a record (maintenance log) has been kept of everything done to the boat in terms of maintenance or repair since we took delivery. This statement is self evident when anyone steps aboard Escape and also serves as a testament to the relationship between the owner and the boat.
